Presidents Welcome Letter

For many years I have belonged to organizations associated with philanthropic causes or a general business networking theme.  I had visited the few design associations in Portland but frankly, never felt inclined to join.  Adding a couple of initials behind my name was not an enticement, nor were the mostly social programs offered. 

As design professionals, we spend much of our day in our offices or in showrooms, by ourselves.  I realized that I was missing the sense of community and collaboration that I had in a past profession. What attracted me to IDS were two things: It is a nationally recognized trade organization of over 30 years and this local Portland chapter was new and unencumbered with "we've always done it this way" people. Being open to new ideas is a trait we all share as design professionals, so it seems natural to express that attitude in our organization, as well.

Whether you are already a member or just trying to get a feel for who we are, I invite you to attend a monthly meeting.  The board of directors and committee members spend hours of volunteered time to bring you the information that you have asked for. Our 2012 Business Strategies Speakers provide our members with ways to increase business and profitability. The Design Partner speakers allow us to get to know our "go to" venders.  After all, we do business with those we know, like & trust.

Creative people are also "fun" people and we have some events planned that we think you will enjoy. We also have a way for members to give back to our community through our alliance with the Annie Ross House. This organization assists families in our area who have been displaced, by offering them temporary housing, furnishings and other critical help to get them on their feet again.

I am very proud and excited to be involved with all of you as we create an IDS chapter that will make everyone feel welcome, included and professionally supported.
